Foraminifera assemblages from Fantangisña serpentinite mud seamount in the NW Pacific Ocean during the Pleistocene (IODP Expedition 366)

چکیده

The Mariana forearc system, in the northwestern Pacific, is known as only convergent margin setting with currently active serpentine mud volcanism. Fantangisña serpentinite volcano lies 62 km west of trench, within influence North Equatorial Current (NEC). Cores recovered by International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 366 contain pelagic sediments overlying layered deposits. At bottom sequence, nannofossil-rich deposits were from under seamount edifice. In this study, we investigated 47 samples Site U1498A on southern flank for benthic and planktonic foraminifera assemblages. Statistical analyses assemblages differentiated two sample groups related to ratio between thermocline/mixed layer taxa, which indicate fluctuations depth thermocline (DOT) during Pleistocene. Variations DOT reflect changes intensity NEC associated El Niño/La Niña conditions. Mudflows do not ecology but possibly enhance their preservation against dissolution, was instead detected deposit suggested common Globigerinoides conglobatus. Benthic foraminifers rare they are severely affected mudflows. Conversely, showed high diversity pre-/post-mud-volcanism, oligotrophic bottom-water

Borehole observations of fluid flow from South Chamorro Seamount, an active serpentinite mud volcano in the Mariana forearc

A sealed borehole observatory (CORK) was deployed on South Chamorro Seamount, an active serpentinite mud volcano in the Mariana forearc to explore subduction-related processes on a non-accretionary, convergent plate margin. Formation fluid was overpressured relative to ambient hydrostatic conditions. Fluid flowed from the borehole at ~0.2 L/s when the observatory was opened to recover instrumen...

Expanding the Cenozoic paleoceanographic record in the Central Arctic Ocean: IODP Expedition 302 Synthesis

The Arctic Coring Expedition (ACEX) proved to be one of the most transformational missions in almost 40 year of scientific ocean drilling. ACEX recovered the first Cenozoic sedimentary sequence from the Arctic Ocean and extended earlier piston core records from ∼1.5 Ma back to ∼56 Ma. The results have had a major impact in paleoceanography even though the recovered sediments represents only 29%...

IODP Expedition 323: Pliocene-Pleistocene paleoceanography and climate history of the Bering Sea

Background and objectives The primary objective of drilling at Site U1345 was to study high-resolution HoloceneLate Pleistocene paleoceanography at a proximal gateway location to the Arctic Ocean at a water depth of ~1008 m. The drill site is located on an interfluve ridge near the large and broad head of Navarin Submarine Channel off the Bering Sea Shelf. It is anticipated to receive ample sup...

IODP Expedition 323: Pliocene-Pleistocene paleoceanography and climate history of the Bering Sea

Background and objectives The primary objective of drilling at Site U1344 (Site GAT-3C) was to study highresolution Pliocene-Pleistocene paleoceanography at a proximal gateway location to the Arctic Ocean at the deepest water depth of Expedition 323. The site is located at ~3200 m along the small summit of a canyon interfluve ~10-15 km southeast of Pervenets Canyon, a large submarine canyon tha...
